    • Searches were conducted in the SciFinder database between December 2013 and January 2014 using the terms "DNA damage" and the name of the selected metal. Duplicates were removed from the resulting hits and included dissertations, reviews, reports, letters, journals, and books from the last ten years (2003-2014). All publications with the term "nanoparticles" were removed, and hits focusing on "superoxide dismutase" were removed from Mn, Cu, and Zn publication lists. For Zn, entries associated primarily with zinc finger domains were also removed to limit publications to those associated with both Zn and reactive oxygen species
