The mutual solubility increases with rising temperature, which makes it difficult to distinguish between homogeneous and heterogenous reactions. Naturally, questions arising in traditional phase-transfer reactions in aqueous biphasic mixtures also arise in fluorous biphasic systems. In a heterogeneous mixture the reaction can still proceed homogeneously (with the catalyst fraction dissolved in the organic phase or with the substrate fraction dissolved in the fluorous phase), heterogenously across the liquid-liquid interface, or in any combination of these pathways. Little information about these details is available in the literature. The oxymoron "homogeneous biphasic catalysis" has been used in this and similar contexts. We feel that new terms should be coined very carefully and only if they contribute to clarifying a complex situation. We suggest the term "homogeneous biphasic catalysis" to be restricted to those rare cases, where the reaction pathways have been investigated and the homogeneous catalysis pathway dominates.
