12. Chiral HPLC conditions: A Chiralcel OD 4.6 × 250 mm chromatography column (Daicel Chemical Co.) was employed for separation of enantiomeric 3-acyl-2,4-pyrrolidinediones. The mobile phase was 75:25 hexane:2-propanol containing 0.3% trifluoroacetic acid. The flow rate was 1.5 mL/min and UV detection was at 280 nm. Typical retention times were 5.3 min and 6.9 min for the (S)- and (R)-enantiomers, respectively.
