An unmindful mistake made by the then graduate student Wang allowed the development of this method to synthesize Ag(I)-NHCs by direct reacting of imidazolium salts with Ag2O. In an experiment presumably to prepare Au(I)-NHCs, Wang, absent mindedly used Ag2O as a base. When he rushed to report the formation of Au(I)-NHCs to Lin, he was asked to redo the experiment without gold compounds. In the product, Wang and Lin found a good quantity of Ag(I)-NHCs
