This paper showed that mutations in IL2RG result in XSCID in humans and therefore revealed crucial roles for γc in the development of T cells and NK cells. The authors correctly speculated that γc has important roles beyond the action of IL-2.

This study showed the contrasting effects of IL-2 and IL-21 during the priming of CD8+ T cells in an antitumour immune response, indicating that the presence of IL-21 during CD8+ T cell priming results in persistence of the cells in vivo and potent antitumour activity.
