    • •], the authors of this paper present a compendium of metabolite profiles of leaf and fruit material from cultivated tomato (S. lycopersicum), and from those wild tomato species that can easily be crossed with it. The data should provide a useful index for breeding, given that they cover both metabolites that are important from an agronomic perspective and those that have previously been described to play a role in abiotic stress responses.

Zamir Zooming in on a quantitative trait for tomato yield using interspecific introgressions Science 305 2004 1786 1789 Brix9-2-5, a QTL that increases the sugar yield of tomatoes, was mapped within a flower- and fruit-specific invertase gene. This paper describes a QTL analysis of five different tomato species that delineated the QTL to a single nucleotide. Furthermore, this study functionally demonstrated that this polymorphism localized to an amino acid in close proximity to the fructosyl-binding site of the invertase crystal. In combination with physiological experiments described in [53], these results demonstrated that this single base change affects both the enzyme kinetics and the sink strength of the invertase. These results indicate the power of diverse ILs for providing high-resolution perspectives on complex phenotypes.

Matsuoka Cytokinin oxidase regulates rice grain production Science 309 2005 741 745 A QTL that increases grain productivity in rice is identified as a gene that encodes cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase. Reduced activity of this enzyme causes cytokinin accumulation in meristematic tissue and increases the number of reproductive organs, resulting in enhanced grain yield. The QTL-pyramiding approach made it possible to combine loci for grain number and plant height, demonstrating that this strategy can be a highly effective means of crop improvement.

    • DNA variation at the invertase locus invGE/GF is associated with tuber quality traits in populations of potato breeding clones
    • ••,53 ], allowed the identification of polymorphisms that are associated with cold sweetening in potato. Increasing amounts of the reducing sugars glucose and fructose results in inferior potato chip quality. This association study suggests that tomato fruit and potato tuber quality is controlled by functional variants of orthologous invertase genes, thus providing a unique example for the potential of synteny-based QTL identification.

Moreau QTL analysis of quality traits in an advanced backcross between Prunus persica cultivars and the wild relative species P. davidiana Theor Appl Genet 109 2004 884 897 A unique genetic study of fruit quality in trees. An advanced backcross population of a commercial variety with a wild parent facilitated the mapping of QTL that affect 24 physical and biochemical traits. This multiyear study shows that classical marker-assisted breeding approaches are not limited to model species, and that quality-related questions can be addressed in tree crops that have a long generation time.
