    • The reason why the ZrO 2 thin films or nanostructures favor a metastable tetragonal structure rather than the monoclinic structure, which has lower symmetry, has already been exploited extensively. The competition between the surface and bulk free energies should be primarily responsible for stabilizing the tetragonal phase, and the stress effect, nucleation, accessibility of external ions should be also considered.
