A control reaction with a mixture of [{RhCl(CO)2}2] and phenylpyridine (2 equiv) in THF in the presence of NaOAc or NEt3 formed in situ under similar conditions as for 3 did not result in well-defined ortho-methylation; the addition of MeI to a non-cyclometalated [{RhCl(CO)2}2]/phenylpyridine mixture leads to the formation of acyl species through the insertion of the methyl group into the Rh-CO bond; (see also:, N. Kumari, M. Sharma, P. Das, D. K. Dutta, Appl. Organomet. Chem. 2002, 16, 258-264); no reaction was observed upon mixing [Rh(acac)(CO)2] and phenylpyridine in CH2Cl2.
