    • An advanced microbial system for the synthesis of alkaloids was developed in this work. First, the authors synthesized (S)-reticuline in an engineered E. coli strain. This intermediate was then supplemented into a recombinant S. cerevisiae culture to produce benzylisoquinoline alkaloids.
