Schmidt-Weber Histamine enhances TGF-β mediated suppression of Th2 responses FASEB J 17 2003 1089 1095 Data presented in this study show that signals mediated by G-protein-coupled receptors can synergize with TGF-β to suppress T cells. This cAMP-dependent mechanism efficiently suppresses IL-4, but not IFN-γ. This study is not only relevant for anti-histamine treatment of allergy, but might also help to therapeutically address the issue of regulatory T cells.

Groux Specific abrogation of transforming growth factor-β signaling in T cells alters atherosclerotic lesion size and composition in mice Blood 102 2003 4052 4058 The authors show that TGF-β affects collagen regulation by mechanisms involving T cells. Transgenic mice that express a dominant-negative TGF-βRII under a T cell specific promoter were generated, and the bone marrow of these mice was transferred into lipoprotein receptor knock-out mice, which develop atherosclerotic plaques under appropriate diet. These mice have increased T cell proliferation, together with a decrease in smooth muscle cell and collagen content, demonstrating that T cell dependent TGF-β signalling is not only controlling the adaptive immune system, but also mediates repair functions.

Kojima The dependence of transforming growth factor-β-induced collagen production on autocrine factor activin A in hepatic stellate cells Endocrinology 145 2004 2753 2759 The authors demonstrate that TGF-β and its family member activin A are dependent on each other, as expected on the basis of common signalling pathways. Schmidt-Weber SARA and Hgs attenuate susceptibility to TGF-β1-mediated T cell suppression FASEB J 17 2003 194 202 This study shows, for the first time, reporter gene measurements in human primary T cells, which allow a direct measurement of TGF-β signalling and overexpression of genes. It is demonstrated that SARA exceeds a mere shuttle function, as it is induced by TGF-β and creates negative feedback regulation.
