    • The dipole moment is a vector, oriented from the (-) to the (+) charge. We define as negative a dipole with its negative charge closest to the semiconductor surface. At the surface of an n-type (p-type) semiconductor a negative (positive) dipole is more stable than a positive (negative) dipole because of its parallel instead of anti-parallel orientation with respect to the electric field that results from the surface and space charge.
