+ T lymphocytes downregulate T helper cell type 2 cytokine secretion and pulmonary eosinophilia during experimental murine respiratory syncytial virus infection. J Exp Med 1997, 186:421-432. This study illustrates how different antigens from the same virus might elicit either T helper cell type 1 or type 2 immune responses. The latter are inappropriate for the clearance of infections but are inhibited by virus-specific cytolytic T cell effector activity. See also [21•].

Hogan SP, Foster PS, Tan X, Ramsay AJ: Mucosal IL-12 gene delivery inhibits allergic airways disease and restores local antiviral immunity. Eur J Immunol 1998, 28:413-423. LIGHT, a new member of the TNF superfamily, and lymphotoxin alpha are ligands for herpesvirus entry medator
-
Mauri DN, Reinhard E, Montgomery RI, Kochel KD, Cheung • TC, Yu GL, Ruben S, Murphy M, Eisenberg RJ, Cohen GH et al.: LIGHT, a new member of the TNF superfamily, and lymphotoxin alpha are ligands for herpesvirus entry medator. Immunity 1998, 8:21-30. These authors identify LIGHT, a novel member of the TNF superfamily expressed by activated T cells, as a ligand for the herpes virus entry mediator (HVEM) on T cells. They also suggest that the herpes simplex virus glycoprotein D, which plays a critical role in infection by binding HVEM, may thereby modify LIGHT-HVEM signalling as a mechanism of evasion of antiviral immunity.

Distinct domains of M-• T2, the myxoma virus tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor homolog, mediate extracellular TNF binding and intracellular apoptosis inhibition

Schreiber M, Sedger L, McFadden G: Distinct domains of M-• T2, the myxoma virus tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor homolog, mediate extracellular TNF binding and intracellular apoptosis inhibition. J Virol 1997, 71:2171-2181. This paper delineates two mechanisms by which M-T2, the TNF receptor homologue of myxoma virus, can inhibit host antiviral strategies. The intracellular domain of M-T2 inhibits apoptosis of cells infected with myxoma virus whilst the extracellular domain prevents TNF-mediated cell killing.

Expression of gamma • interferon by simian immunodeficiency virus increases attenuation and reduces postchallenge virus load in vaccinated rhesus macaques
-
Giavedoni L, Ahmad S, Jones L, Yilma T: Expression of gamma • interferon by simian immunodeficiency virus increases attenuation and reduces postchallenge virus load in vaccinated rhesus macaques. J Virol 1997, 71:866-72. Expression of interferon (IFN)-γ in a recombinant nef-deleted simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) was shown to result in increased virus attenuation. Following challenge with virulent SIV, virus titres were lower in macaques that had previously received the IFN-γ-expressing SIV than in those which had received the control nef-deleted SIV.

Flexible •• programs of chemokine receptor expression on human polarised T helper 1 and 2 lymphocytes
-
Sallusto F, Lenig D, Mackay CR, Lanzavecchia A: Flexible •• programs of chemokine receptor expression on human polarised T helper 1 and 2 lymphocytes. J Exp Med 1998, 187:875-883. This paper demonstrates that the exposure of highly polarised Th1 and Th2 cells to different cytokines determines the nature of the chemokine receptors which they express. These, in turn, may be important in the control of tissue-specific migration of effector T cells.
