    • note
    • We note here one important difference in the results obtained using ML vs REML. Using REML to calculate intraclass correlations resulted in a substantially larger intraclass correlation (ρ = 0.18) for the third (between-classrooms) level of our nested data set. Unlike the results obtained using ML presented above, this intraclass correlation suggested that a three-level HLM was indeed appropriate. However, when the data were analyzed with a three-level HLM using the REML algorithm (Supporting Information, Section S7), results were similar to those obtained with a two-level HLM using the ML algorithm. Thus, for the sake of parsimony, we present here the results obtained with a two-level HLM using the ML algorithm.
