    • Allergen-specific Th1 cells counteract efferent Th2 cell-dependent bronchial hyperresponsiveness and eosinophilic inflammation partly via IFN-gamma
    • This study demonstrates that syngenic allergen-specific Th1 cells transferred into rats inhibited the development of pulmonary Th2 responses induced by the transfer of allergen specific Th2 cells. The effect was not observed when IFN-γ was neutralised, thereby supporting the view that allergen-specific Th1 cells can counteract Th2 cell-mediated inflammation by secreting IFN-γ

    • This study illustrated that, in a similar way to live BCG, heat-killed BCG applied i.n. into mice inhibited the development of allergen-induced airway eosinophilia for up to two months after the application. In addition, evidence is provided that treatment with live or heat-killed BCG inhibited the efficient recruitment of Th2 cells into the airways

    • This is the first report showing that the intratracheal application of CpG-ODN covalently linked to allergen is very efficient in inhibiting allergen-induced Th2 responses. In addition, the authors found that 100-fold less of the conjugate could be used to inhibit the development of Th2 responses compared with giving CpG-ODN alone. These results indicate that vaccines utilising CpG-ODN should use conjugates, as negative side effects associated with increased inflammation after the application of CpG-ODN may be avoided
