    • According to the classical stereochemical definition, the term "conformation" describes "the different spatial arrangements of atoms in molecules that result solely from torsions (rotations) around single and/or partial double bonds." However, in the domain of supramole-cular chemistry, molecular motions arise from the competitive noncovalent interactions between the components. Such molecular motions are not restricted to the atoms, but part of an interlocked molecule can move from one recognition site to another, depending on the binding affinities of the recognition units. Therefore, the term "co-conformation" was introduced to describe the translational isomers of mechanically interlocked molecules. In a wider sense, it illustrates the spatial location of one mechanically interlocked component, which can move around or along the other "stationary" component. See
