    • Crosstalk between cAMP and MAP kinase signaling in the regulation of cell proliferation
    • The authors describe the capacity of cAMP for either positive or negative regulation of the ERK cascade accounting for many of the cell-type-specific actions of cAMP on cell proliferation. There are several specific mechanisms involved in the inhibition or activation of ERKs by cAMP. One of these mechanisms involves the activation of the GTPase Ras-related protein-1 (Rap1), which can activate or inhibit ERK signaling in a cell-specific manner

    • CREB - A real culprit in oncogenesis
    • This minireview summarizes the different lines of existing evidence that support a direct role of calcium response element binding protein (CREB) in oncogenesis. Regulated activation of CREB has a significant effect on cellular growth, proliferation and survival. To overturn the cellular control of these processes, tumor cells have developed various mechanisms to achieve constitutive activation of CREB, (gene amplification, chromosome translocation, interaction with viral oncoproteins, and inactivation of tumor suppressor genes). These mechanisms converge on the phosphorylation of CREB and/or the activation of transducer of regulated CREB activity (TORC) coactivators to effect uncontrolled proliferation of cells

    • Extracellular cAMP dependent protein kinase (ECPKA) in melanoma
    • The catalytic kinase subunit of the cAMP-dependent protein kinase is secreted by tumor cells and can be detected in the serum of cancer patients. This report examines the clinical signifi cance of this secreted C subunit kinase termed extracellular protein kinase (ECPKA) in melanoma patients. The results showed that the presence of ECPKA activity in the serum of melanoma patients correlates with the appearance and size of the tumor. Most importantly, surgical removal of melanoma caused a precipitous decrease in ECPKA activity in the sera of patients, suggesting that ECPKA may be a novel predictive marker for melanoma
