    • The defect-defect density-wave-mediated interaction derives the (sqrt(3) × sqrt(3)) to (3 × 3) phase transition in α-Sn/Ge(1 1 1) system. Ge defects start to interact and realign onto the honeycomb sublattice, then the realignment of Ge defects locks in the (3 × 3) phase when the temperature-dependent decay length l(T) becomes comparable to the average defect-defect spacing lav = 45 Å.

    • Sn/Ge(1 1 1) presents a reversible (sqrt(3) × sqrt(3)) to (3 × 3) transition associated with a surface soft phonon and at LT, this soft mode freezes into the (3 × 3) reconstruction, while at RT, the system vibrates with Sn adatoms displaying large vertical displacement, which these dynamical fluctuations yield on average a (sqrt(3) × sqrt(3)) symmetry that retains locally a (3 × 3) reconstruction. About the role of substitutional defects in this system, they presented that although the defects can affect the transition temperature, they are not the driving force behind the (sqrt(3) × sqrt(3)) phase transition.
