Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNFα) as a novel therapeutic target in symptomatic corticosteroid-dependent asthma
-
Sep 15 [Epub ahead of print]
-
Howarth PH, Babu KS, Arshad HS, et al. Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNFα) as a novel therapeutic target in symptomatic corticosteroid- dependent asthma. Thorax 2005 Sep 15 [Epub ahead of print]. This was the first study to show that TNF-α blocking agents can improve symptoms, lung function and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in chronic severe asthma. It also provides evidence that TNF-α production is increased in these patients.

Effect of tumor necrosis factor antagonism on allergen-mediated asthmatic airway inflammation
-
Rouhani FN, Meitin CA, Kaler M, et al. Effect of tumor necrosis factor antagonism on allergen-mediated asthmatic airway inflammation. Respir Med 2005; 99:1175-1182. This work indirectly supports the view that only when asthma becomes more severe and chronic, with the acquisition of an altered inflammatory profile towards a Th1-type response, may anti-TNF-α strategies become useful.
