TAK1 is activated in the myocardium after pressure overload and is sufficient to provoke heart failure in transgenic mice
-
TAK1 is an upstream activator of both JNK and p38, both of which have been implicated in apoptotic signaling. These authors show that both apoptosis and heart failure can be induced in transgenic mice by an activated form of TAK1, providing a functional link between the two processes.

Hypoxia-activated apoptosis of cardiac myocytes requires reoxygenation or a pH shift and is independent of p53
-
In this paper we demonstrate that p53 is completely dispensible for both hypoxia-induced and reoxygenation-induced apoptosis in the cardiac myocyte in vivo and in vitro, and that acidification is likely to be the trig myocyte in vivo and in vitro, and that acidification is likely to be the trigger for apoptosis during hypoxia.
