Transduction of human CD34+ cells that mediate long-term engraftment of NOD/SCID mice by HIV vectors
-
The authors demonstrate that lentiviral vectors, based on HIV-1, can mediate transduction of a significant portion of NOD/SCID-engrafting cells from human cord blood in the absence of cytokine stimulation.

Cell cycle-related changes in repopulating capacity of human mobilized peripheral blood CD34(+) cells in non-obese diabetic/severe combined immune-deficient mice
-
The authors demonstrate that hematopoietic stem cells that have been driven out of their quiescent state into cell cycle do not engraft as well as resting stem cells. Discussion of these findings, and their implications, is provided in the text of the review.

Adhesion receptor expression by hematopoietic cell lines and murine progenitors: Modulation by cytokines and cell cycle status
-
Cells cultured in suspension with cytokines have reduced expression of VLA-4 and other integrins. The reduction in integrin levels correlated with poor engraftment.

Highly efficient transduction of the green fluorescent protein gene in human umbilical cord blood stem cells capable of cobblestone formation in long-term cultures and multilineage engraftment of immunodeficient mice

The authors used the EGFP marker, detectable by FACS (flow-assisted cell sorting), to optimize vector promoters and transduction conditions that allow transgene expression in multilineage progeny of human umbilical cord blood progenitors in NOD/SCID mice.
