    • The effect of solvents in altering the position, intensity, and shape of absorption bands in UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectra is termed solvatochromism; see ref. A hypsochromic (blue)shift of the absorption band with increasing solvent polarity is called negative solvatochromism. The corresponding bathochromic (red)shift with increasing solvent polarity is termed positive solvatochromism. Solvatochromism is occured by differential solvation of the ground and first excited state of the light-absorbing molecules; see ref.
