The proposed ring-in-ring approach to the synthesis of molecular Borromean rings (Figure1d) first appeared in the literature as part of a review on template-directed synthesis, but no attempts, as far as we know, had been made to prepare the complexes and compounds featured in the review (see:, T. J. Hubin, A. G. Kolchinski, A. L. Vance, D. H. Busch, Adv. Supramol. Chem. 1999, 6, 237-357). The molecular Borromean rings have been a long-standing synthetic target within our research group, and similar proposed retrosyntheses involving ring-in-ring complexes had been discussed and syntheses attempted prior to the publication of the Busch review in 1999, albeit without any significant progress being made towards a synthesis of the molecular Borromean rings.
