    • Although elucidation of the chemical nature of the Si-alkyne bonding was outside the scope of this work, we note that Si-H hydrosilylation of an alkyne may lead to a surface alkene or alkane if the latter further reacts with an adjacent Si-H group.7a In our case the absence of CC stretch in the IR spectrum of surface 2 suggests that a saturated linker is tethered to the surface by two Si-C bonds. Retention of a surface alkene has been reported when Si(111) or porous silicon were used,6b,17 but not for Si(100),6a,18 in agreement with the present data
