The UV spectral change of 8 upon addition of Zn2, 50, 250, and 500 μM at pH 7.4 (10 mM HEPES with I, 0.1 (NaNO 3, and 25°C was followed by UV spectra. As summarized in Figure S1 in the Supporting Information, the formation of 9 completes in 15 min. The second rate constant (k2) for Zn2+ complexation of 8 at pH 7.4 and 25°C was determined to be k2, 3.4 × 10 M-1·s-1. This value was smaller than that (k2, 1.3 × 102 M-1·s-1) for Zn2+ complexation of noncaged probe 6, possibly because the protecting (benzenesulfonyl) group at 8-quinolinol moiety disturbs chelation of the quinolinol nitrogen to Zn 2
