    • Complete differentiation of CD8+ T cells activated locally within the transplanted liver
    • This study challenges the hypothesis that liver primarily induces T cell tolerance. Using an orthotopic liver transplantation model excluding microchimerism, the authors elegantly show that liver efficiently induces CD8 T cell activation and differentiation. Thus, liver represents a self-sufficient site for T cell priming. However, the entity of the activating liver APC remained unclear.

    • Retinoic acid signaling sensitizes hepatic stellate cells to NK cell killing via upregulation of NK cell activating ligand RAE1
    • The authors present the impact of retinoic acid on hepatic stellate cells, which leads to upregulation of RAE-1, a target for NK cell killing. Moreover, the production of retinoic acid by stellate cells is demonstrated by HPLC.

    • This is the first paper showing that retinoic acid in combination with TGF-β induces the generation of regulatory T cells. In addition, retinoic acid overrides the differentiation of inflammatory TH17 cells dependent on TGF-β and IL-6.
