    • A role for the immunological synapse in lineage commitment of CD4 lymphocytes
    • The authors demonstrate that activation of naïve CD4 T cells results in recruitment of IFNγ receptors into the immunological synapse. IL-4 receptors were not similarly localized and remained peripherally distributed. Remarkably, exogenous IL-4 blocked the recruitment of IFNγ receptors, suggesting a physical underpinning to the ability of IL-4 to disrupt Th1 differentiation.

    • T cells use two directionally distinct pathways for cytokine secretion
    • These authors use imaging techniques to distinguish secretion of some cytokines, including IL-2, IFNγ and IL-10, at the immunologic synapse, and others, including IL-4 and TNFα, multidirectionally and away from the synapse. This suggests that these patterned cytokines are directed at distinct cellular targets.
