    • DFT calculations at the 6-31G*//B3PW91 level of theory showed four different optimized geometries with energies ranging over a 0.4 kJ/mol spread. This result suggests that the potential energy surface of the isolated dimer is relatively flat, leading to a large number of accessible conformations. The frequency calculations also provided a good match to the spacings in the observed IR spectra of SAM (1b) on planar Au and Pd.
