-

Curr Opin Clin Nutr 2004; 4:419-426. In this article, the authors evaluated the effects of cancer anorexia in specific components of the cytokine-induced anorectic reactions, including interleukin 1β system components, tumor necrosis factor α, transforming growth factor β1, and interferon γ, in tumor tissue, liver and brain of anorectic rats. The results suggest that the interleukin 1β system plays a significant role in this model of cancer anorexia.

Cachexia and obesity: Two sides of one coin?
-
Inui A, Meguid MM. Cachexia and obesity: two sides of one coin? Curr Opin Clin Nutr Metab Care 2003; 6:395-399. This paper discusses the orexigenic and anorexigenic circuits that lead to either obesity or cachexia. It discusses the mechanisms by which metabolic signals from periphery lead to an imbalance in the central nervous system, leading to an increase or a decrease in food intake, and the role of leptin in the anorexia-cachexia syndrome.

Involvement of plasma leptin, insulin and free tryptophan in cytokine-induced anorexia
-
Sato T, Laviano A, Meguid MM, et al. Involvement of plasma leptin, insulin and free tryptophan in cytokine-induced anorexia. Clin Nutr 2003; 22:139-146. The authors injected interleukin 1α and/or tumor necrosis factor α, or tryptophan subcutaneously into male rats to evaluate their effects on food intake, body weight, carcass adiposity, plasma leptin and insulin. This article provides evidence that interleukin 1α injection decreased food intake and increased plasma free tryptophan that may contribute to synthesis of brain serotonin induced by interleukin 1α.

Ghrelin, appetite, and gastric motility: The emerging role of the stomach as an endocrine organ
-
Inui A, Asakawa A, Bowers CY, et al. Ghrelin, appetite, and gastric motility: the emerging role of the stomach as an endocrine organ. FASEB J 2004; 18:439-456. This article is an overview of the current available data about ghrelin. This article illustrates the importance of ghrelin in regulating food intake and describes the interaction of ghrelin with the hypothalamic food-intake system and with peripheral hormones.

Upregulation of ghrelin expression in cachectic nude mice bearing human melanoma cells
-
Hanada T, Toshinai K, Date Y, et al. Upregulation of ghrelin expression in cachectic nude mice bearing human melanoma cells. Metabolism 2004; 53:84-88. In this interesting article the authors studied the biosynthesis and secretion of ghrelin in a cancer (melanoma) cachexia mouse model. The plasma concentration of ghrelin increased with the progression of cachexia, providing evidence of the involvement of ghrelin in the regulation of energy homeostasis in cancer anorexia-cachexia syndrome.

Decreased NPY innervation of the hypothalamic nuclei in rats with cancer anorexia
-
Makarenko IG, Meguid MM, Gatto L, et al. Decreased NPY innervation of the hypothalamic nuclei in rats with cancer anorexia. Brain Res 2003; 961:100-108. This article analyzed the hypothalamic NPY immunostaining in tumor-bearing rats. It provides the overall effects of anorexia on NPY concentration in many hypothalamic regions. Also discussed in detail are the hypothalamic regions involved in food-intake control. This paper supports the theory that at the onset of anorexia in tumor-bearing rats, an altered hypothalamic NPY system influences the food intake.
