As noted by one of the reviewers, the term "hemozoin" is used to describe the form of polymerized hematin produced by the parasite. While this material has the same composition as "β-hematin" produced in the laboratory, the physical state and the size of the crystals may be different. Therefore, in this paper, we have referred to hemozoin when describing parasite-derived material and β-hematin to describe the synthetic equivalent.
