    • The Thrifty Food Plan is not thrifty when labor cost is considered
    • This article points out that the TFP assumes that all food is prepared at home but it does not factor in food preparation time, which leads to an underestimate of the true cost of the TFP for low-income families. The study finds that once labor is included, the TFP is not very thrifty and the mean household falls short of the TFP guidelines even with adequate monetary resources. The authors conclude that the total labor associated with the TFP should be no greater than about six hours per week if it is to work for families, and one simple and practical policy solution is to develop more labor-efficient recipes that satisfy the TFP
