The symbol of Trinacria (mentioned in Homer's Odyssey), present in the ag of Sicily, is composed of the head of the Gorgon, with two snakes instead of hair and wings for ears, from which three folded legs irradiate. The three legs represent the three promontories of Sicily, located in the three corners of the island at Messina (Cape Peloro), Marsala (Cape Lilibeo), and Siracusa (Cape Passero). On August 30, 1302, Sicily became the Kingdom of Trinacria, and its sovereignty was assigned to Federico II of Aragon. The symbol is also present in the ?ag of the Isle of Man (exported by the Normans in 1072) as well as in the coats of arms of several noble dynasties.
