    • Assume that at 120 °C the ratio of the reaction rate of alkyne 5 to alkene 6 is a: l.Now, there is a mixture of alkyne and alkene where the mole fraction of the alkyne is x and the mole fraction of the alkene is (1 - x). Thus, the adsorption rate of the alkyne would be ax per unit time, that of the alkene would be (1 - x) per unit time, and that of the mixture would be ax +(1 -x) = (1 + x(a- I)) per unit time. Because reagents 5 and 6 are present in excess by orders of magnitude, the extent of reaction on the surface would correspond to the reaction rates of the alkyne and the alkene. Thus, the ratio of the adsorption rate of the alkyne to the adsorption rate of the entire mixture, and hence the mole ratio of the alkyne in the completed monolayer, would be equal to ax/[l + x(a - 1)]. This equation is then used to fit the XPS data. The fitted coefficient is a = 1.67 ± 0.17.
