    • In all experiments, the ATR-FTIR measurements suggest the complete disappearance of the Si(111)-H vibrational mode. This is inconsistent with the estimated 50% coverage of the surface proposed by Chidsey (ref 18). In fact, this absorption can be observed on alkylmodified Si(111) using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (to be published) and appears to have been heterogeneously broadened to the extent that it cannot be observed by IR absorption.
