Ophthalmia neonatorum is a form of bacterial conjunctivitis contracted by newborn babies. A number of bacteria found in the mother's birth canal contaminate the baby's eye during the time of birth; e.g., Neisseria gonorrhea, Chlamydia trachomatis. Later, the use of silver nitrate was abolished as it was found that silver nitrate acts as a chemical irritant leading to conjuctivitis.
