The British Nutrition Foundation was recently commissioned by the Food Standards Agency to conduct a review of the government's research programme on Antioxidants in Food. Part of this work is presented in this paper. The authors conclude that the suggestion that antioxidant supplements can prevent chronic diseases has not been proved by the findings of published intervention trials. Further evidence regarding the efficacy, safety and appropriate dosage of antioxidants is needed.

This paper reports a metaanalysis of seven randomized trials of vitamin E treatment and, separately, eight of β-carotene treatment; all trials included 1000 or more patients. The dose range for vitamin E was 50-800 IU, and for β-carotene it was 15-50 mg. Follow-up period ranged from 1.4 to 12.0 years.

This paper assessed the contribution of culinary and medicinal herbs to the total intake of dietary antioxidants. The results demonstrate that there is more than a 1000-fold difference among antioxidant concentrations of various herbs. It was concluded that, in a normal diet, intake of herbs may contribute significantly to the total intake of plant antioxidants, and be an even better source of dietary antioxidants than many other food groups such as fruits, berries, cereals and vegetables.

Ten patients were supplemented with juice for 1 year and five of them continued for up to 3 years. The results suggest that pomegranate juice consumption decreases carotid intima-media thickness and systolic blood pressure.

This review describes some of the many effects of quercetin, and how molecular imaging using transgenic reporter mice may serve as a tool to study the integrated influence of quercetin and other dietary phytochemicals on gene expression in vivo.
