1H) spectra, and the detection of other substances using proton spectroscopy often entails nothing more than software changes. Thus, most of the improvements now heading toward clinical use tend to be based on hydrogen. There is a large body of literature on cellular energetics using phosphorus resonance, with a suggestion of clinical utility from the analysis of high energy stores such as phosphocreatine, ATP, ADP, AMP, adenosine, and the like

Light propagates through tissue much as a gas diffuses through air, in a random, scattered walk called photon diffusion. At wavelengths near the blue, the absorbance of tissue is high, such that photons travel a few hundred microns or less before being absorbed; in contrast in the red and infrared wavelengths, photons scatter but travel millimeters to centimeters before absorption, and this scattering dominates the transport of photons across tissue. Scattering of light redirects photons based upon local changes in index-of-refraction. These refraction changes come from objects with structures on the size order of the wavelength of light (typically nucleus and cell membranes, and to a lesser extent mitochondria). The physics of the imaging has been well studied, is complex, and continues to evolve, in part because unlike in the transport of high-energy photons from PET or X-ray, a
