Two types of crystalline arrays of colloidal spheres (or colloidal arrays) have been extensively studied: the first type includes fee lattices formed from highly charged colloidal spheres and their volume fractions of colloids are often less than 10%; the second type is a ccp structure (also a fcc lattice) and its volume fraction of colloids is always close to 74%. In our discussion, the first type will be referred to as colloidal crystals, and the second type as the so-called synthetic opals, opaline structures, or opaline arrays.
