Mucosal immunoregulation and inflammatory bowel disease: New insights from murine models of inflammation
-
2 Strober W, Fuss IJ, Ehrhardt RO, Neurath M, Boirivant M, Ludviksson BR: Mucosal immunoregulation and inflammatory bowel disease: new insights from murine models of inflammation. Scand J Immunol 1998, 48:453-458. This is an excellent review of experimental models and the mechanisms involved in the development of IBD. The review focuses on the role of TGF-β-mediated oral tolerance in intestinal inflammatory responses.

Oxazolone colitis: A murine model of T helper cell type 2 colitis treatable with antibodies to interleukin 4
-
5 Boirivant M, Fuss IJ, Chu A, Strober W: Oxazolone colitis: a murine model of T helper cell type 2 colitis treatable with antibodies to interleukin 4. J Exp Med 1998, 188:1929-1939. Colitis was induced in SJL/J mice by rectal administration of the haptenating agent, oxazolone. The colitis was limited to the distal half of the colon and was characterized by inflammation of the superficial layers of mucosa associated with ulceration. The lesional tissue contained increased amounts of TH2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-5. Anti-IL-4 but not anti-IL-12 antibody administration led to amelioration of the disease process. The TH2 cytokine response in this model is counterbalanced by a marked TGF-β response.
