Diabetes induced by Coxsackie virus: Initiation by bystander damage and not molecular mimicry
-
The BDC2.5 TCR-transgenic mouse model was used to show that diabetes was accelerated following infection with Coxsackie virus. As the T cells have not been shown to respond to the virus, the implication is that acceleration is due to inflammation and bystander activation of cells rather than molecular mimicry

Control of autoimmune diabetes in NOD mice by GAD expression or suppression in beta cells
-
This study uses a transgenic construct encoding antisense GAD-65 and GAD-67. It was shown that, in the line where GAD-65 and GAD-67 were most completely suppressed, not only were insulitis and diabetes abolished but also cells from these mice could not cause disease on adoptive transfer; transfer of diabetic spleen cells did not destroy the islets from the antisense-transgenic mice

Induction of insulitis by glutamic acid decarboxylase peptide-specific and HLA-DQ8-restricted CD4(+) T cells from human DQ transgenic mice
-
[Published erratum appears in J Clin Invest 1998, 102:1463] This paper demonstrates the effect of adoptive transfer of GAD-peptide-reactive T cell lines into HLA-DQ8-transgenic mice. It shows that the lines will not cause insulitis or diabetes unless the recipients are given a mild islet insult in the form of low-dose streptozotocin
