Microvessel densities of these samples were significantly higher than those of the control subjects. Bone marrow vascularity in leukemic patients was complex with arborizing branching of microvessels, in contrast to single, straight microvessels without branching in control subjects. Urinary basic fibroblast growth factor levels also were increased in all of the 22 patients tested before treatment. This finding provides a rationale for using antiangiogenic agents in the treatment of childhood ALL.
