Early locomotor training with clonidine in spinal cats
-
Chau C, Barbeau H, Rossignol S. Early locomotor training with clonidine in spinal cats. J Neurophysiol 1998; 79:392-409. This report illustrates the combined use of a pharmacological treatment (clonidine) and of sensory stimulation to optimize the restoration of locomotion in paraplegic cats. Such a study contributes to elaborate a strategy for rehabilitation of paraplegic patients.

Long-distance axonal regeneration in the transected adult rat spinal cord is promoted by olfactory ensheathing glia transplants
-
Ramón-Cueto A, Plant GW, Avila J, Bunge MB. Long-distance axonal regeneration in the transected adult rat spinal cord is promoted by olfactory ensheathing glia transplants. J Neurosci 1998; 18:3803-3815. This paper illustrates the ability of olfactory ensheathing glia to promote axonal regeneration in the spinal cord. This particular type of glia is present only in the olfactory bulb, and accounts for the permissiveness of adult olfactory bulb to axonal growth. After transplantation in a transected spinal cord, bridged with Schwann cells, ensheathing glila associate with regenerating axons and migrate with them over at least 1.5 cm in white as well as grey matter.

Repair of adult rat corticospinal tract by transplants of olfactory ensheathing cells
-
Li Y, Field PM, Raismn G. Repair of adult rat corticospinal tract by transplants of olfactory ensheathing cells. Science 1997; 277:2000-2002. This paper illustrates the ability of grafted olfactory ensheathing glia to promote the regeneration of the corticospinal tract, and to restore a specific function (forepaw reaching) associated with the corticospinal projection. Some of the ensheathing glia cells are claimed to behave like Schwann cells, by myelinating regenerating axons.

Tanycytes present in the adult rat mediobasal hypothalamus support the regeneration of monoaminergic axons
-
Chauvet N, Prieto M, Alonso G. Tanycytes present in the adult rat mediobasal hypothalamus support the regeneration of monoaminergic axons. Exp Neurol 1998; 151:1-13. This study illustrates the capacity of a particular category of glial cells, the tanycytes of basal hypothalamus, to support the regeneration of monoaminergic axons. In some respects tanycytes behave like olfactory bulb ensheathing cells, with which they share several cellular and molecular characteristics.
