An alternative pathway is that the Ir-H(D) species adds in a 2,1-fashion to form tert-alkyliridium D having an agostic interaction with the formed Me group. Rapid rotation of the agostic Me followed by β-elimination would result in D incorporation into the methylene positions as observed. Exchange of the nonagostic Me with the agostic Me followed by β-elimination would result in minor D incorporation into the Me group as observed (e.g. 1% D incorporation into Me in the reaction of α-methylstyrene).
