Ref. 20 solely mentions a plausible acceleration of the thermal tautomerization of 6 back to starting material 5 catalysed by Brønsted acid 8. Because it is a thermal step, no assumptions should be made that 8 displays any catalytic activity towards the forward photochemical step I.e., the absolute and relative association constants of 8 to 5, 6, and 7. For values and their relation see ref. 20 and references therein Photocyclodimerization of 2-naphthoates has been found to proceed enantioselectively as well in the presence of γ-cyclodextrin but reports only mention superstoichiometric use of this chiral reagent
