A prospective natural-history study of coronary atherosclerosis. N Engl J Med. 2011;364(3):226-35. This article prospectively followed the progression of plaques in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) for median of 3.4 years using coronary angiography and radiofrequency intravascular ultrasound. Major finding was that the non-culprit lesions for initial ACS event were equally likely to cause major cardiovascular adverse events. These lesions were mostly angiographically mild but had characteristics of vulnerable plaque, including thin-cap fibroatheromas, large plaque burden or small luminal area.
