P38α MAP kinase is essential in lung stem and progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation
-
This paper describes the key role of p38α in promoting cell differentiation, negatively regulating stem cell proliferation. Loss of p38α sensitizes mice to mutated K-ras tumorigenesis. However, it should be noted that the inducible Cre-ERT2 recombinase was under the control of the locus encoding the large subunit of RNA polymerase II, thus deletion of MAPK14 was not specific to BASCs, and lung tumour susceptibility may have been indirectly influenced by MAPK14 deletion in other tissues

P53 controls cancer cell invasion by inducing the MDM2-mediated degradation of Slug
-
This research demonstrated, as expected, that NSCLC patients with wild-type p53 had high levels of the ubiquitin ligase MDM2, and that MDM2 is responsible for the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of Slug. In patients with mutant p53, there was no expression of MDM2, so Slug was upregulated and consequently E-cadherin was not expressed; this resulted in more invasive tumours through EMT. This paper highlights the role of p53 in tumour invasion, extending its repertoire beyond apoptosis and cell cycle arrest
