    • The results of a detailed analysis of the kinetics of the development, progression, and persistence of AHR and airway remodeling support the hypothesis that early increases in AHR are associated with increases in immune-mediated events, including airway infiltrate composed of eosinophils, whereas sustained AHR is associated with structural remodeling events, including collagen deposition and an increase in ASM area.

    • FcepsilonRI-mediated amphiregulin production by human mast cells increases mucin gene expression in epithelial cells
    • Amphiregulin (AREG) was secreted by human MCs following aggregation of FcεRI, and its expression was not inhibited by a glucocorticoid (dexamethasone). AREG up-regulated mucin gene expression in airway epithelial cells. Up-regulation of AREG expression was observed in MCs of asthmatic patients, but not normal control subjects. Furthermore, up-regulation of AREG in MCs significantly correlated with the extent of goblet cell hyperplasia in the mucosa of bronchial asthmatics.
