    • The electrochemical sign convention where more positive energies are closer to the vacuum level is used throughout this paper. This is different from the convention used previously in refs 45 and 46, amongst others. The electrochemical potential of the redox couple (and also the solution) is related to the Nernstian potential of the couple, E(A/A, by E(A/A, qEA/A, where q is unsigned. Hence, negative Nernstian potentials are closer to the vacuum level whereas more negative energies are more bound and further from the vacuum level energy
