Gut hormone profiles following bariatric surgery favor an anorectic state, facilitate weight loss, and improve metabolic parameters
-
Le Roux CW, Aylwin SJ, Batterham RL, et al. Gut hormone profiles following bariatric surgery favor an anorectic state, facilitate weight loss, and improve metabolic parameters. Ann Surg 2006; 243:108-114. In this paper the authors study the meal-stimulated response of gut hormones in patients following RGYB or gastric bypass, allowing a comparison between the mechanisms that operate in each surgery procedure to achieve weight loss. In addition, they study the role of PYY in weight loss reduction in a rat model of jejunointestinal bypass.

Progressive rise in gut hormone levels after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass suggests gut adaptation and explains altered satiety
-
Borg CM, le Roux CW, Ghatei MA, et al. Progressive rise in gut hormone levels after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass suggests gut adaptation and explains altered satiety. Br J Surg 2006; 93:210-215. An important study investigating the prospective changes in gut hormones and metabolic indices after RYGB. The authors suggest gut adaptation and the consequent graded rise in the levels of gut hormones that promote satiety account for the lack of the expected increase in food intake.

PYY[3-36] administration decreases the respiratory quotient and reduces adiposity in diet-induced obese mice
-
3-36 induces a negative energy balance by reducing food intake and increasing mobilization of fat stores. These effects are relevant for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in RYGB-induced catabolism and weight loss.
