    • Carbohydrate bioavailability
    • A rational basis is provided for the nutritional characterisation of dietary carbohydrates. A classification and measurement scheme is proposed based on the properties of carbohydrate foods identified to be of specific relevance to health. This is complementary to the dietary fibre and glycaemic index concepts in the promotion of healthy diets with low energy density required for combating obesity-related diseases.

    • Obesity alters microbial gut ecology
    • Using 16S rDNA-based approaches, the composition was determined of the distal intestinal (cecal) microbiota of genetically obese ob/ob mice, lean ob/+ and wild-type siblings, and their ob/+ mothers, all fed the same polysaccharide-rich diet. Compared with lean mice and regardless of kinship, ob/ob animals have a 50% reduction in the abundance of Bacteroidetes and a proportional increase in Firmicutes. These first results on the relation between obesity and the diversity of the gut microbiota suggest that intentional manipulation of community structure might be useful for regulating energy balance in obese individuals.

    • Expressing the glycaemic potency of foods
    • A new indicator, the glycemic glucose equivalent (GGE), is introduced that overcomes the limitations of GI. It is defined as the weight of glucose that would induce a glycemic response equal to that induced by the food. It is concluded that the GGE is also a scientifically more precise and meaningful term with which to express glycaemic potency than is GL.

    • 15N-incorporation of double isotope labeled Lactobacillus johnsonii in humans
    • The first study to address the fate and kinetics of a probiotic in humans using stable isotopes. Although the stable isotopes could be recovered from the breath of subjects after only 30 min, the orocecal transit time was 3.7 h. Remarkably, almost half of the label was recovered in urine (as expected notably the nitrogen) and faecal samples.
