In a European case control study of 750 cases of atherosclerotic vascular disease and BDO controls, a dose response effect was noted between homocysteine and risk, for both sexes. Both fasting and post-methionine homocysteine concentrations were related to increased risk.

In a comparison of 293 Physicians' Health Study participants who developed myocardial infarction during 8 years of follow-up and 290 control subjects, the homozygous genotype for the C677T polymorphism in methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase was associated with significantly increased homocysteine levels but not with increased myocardial infarction.
